Ten years ago I weighed almost 400 pounds when I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic with fatty liver disease on top of it. My blood pressure was through the roof and I couldn't get on an airplane without getting a sinus infection.

Your gut is a continuous tube that starts at your mouth, runs through your body and ends at your anus. It’s populated by a 100 trillion or so bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microbes. These living organisms are referred to as your microbiome.
There are ten times more of those living organisms than the total number of cells in your body. And they control a lot more of your body than most people are aware of. They don’t just process and digest whatever goes in your mouth, they also strongly influence your metabolism.
They produce many of the hormones your body needs to function, as well as various chemicals like the feel-good chemical serotonin.
They’re responsible for about 70% of your immune system, which fights off pathogens and infections. And there’s a lot of emerging evidence that they’re more responsible for your mood, behavior and mental health than we ever thought before.
In other words, they’re a big deal!
And just as we see in the larger world, the microbiome has good guys and bad guys. If we keep the good guys healthy and happy, they overwhelm the bad actors and our body and mind is in a healthy state.

Most of the chronic diseases that are affecting, and yes, killing people every day, are classified as metabolic diseases.
Fatty liver disease, kidney diseases and most cardiovascular (heart) diseases. diabetes, hyperlipidemia, Metabolic Syndrome, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and my goodness, obesity. Americans and the Western world have never been fatter.

The processed food we’re sold today is nothing like what I grew up on in the 1950’s and 60’s. The processed food we eat today has more than 2,500 chemicals added to it, according to a trusted medical journal called Toxicology Research and Application.
These chemicals, many of which weren’t even around fifty years ago, are intentionally added by manufacturers to change the taste, color, and texture of the food, all of it to save them or make them more money. It also makes the food more addictive..
Everybody's favorite, Oreo cookies. Wow! Have I eaten a few of those.
Originally they were made with REAL vanilla buttercream.
Not today. Try canola oil and high fructose corn syrup. The vanilla flavor today is an artificial flavor called vanillin. Vanilla is made from vanilla beans. Vanillin is made from chemicals.
How about a good Ritz Cracker? Originally eight ingredients, they're now so bad they're banned at Whole Foods Market.
One of my favorites, Pepperidge Farm Bread. The founder Mrs. Rudkin started baking bread to try to feed her 9-year-old son back to health.
She made it with fresh milk and AA butter, the finest available.
The conglomerate that bought it now makes it with soybean oil, monoglycerides and three ingredients banned at Whole Foods Market.
And what about good ole fashioned Heinz 57 sauce? On the original label it advertised no Benzoate of Soda because the medical profession in those days had said it was a dangerous artificial preservative.
So what's in it today?
Sodium benzoate, right along with soybean oil and high fructose corn syrup.
So what about Hellman's Real mayonnaise? And I use the word REAL loosely.
Originally just five ingredients. Today soybean oil is the number one ingredient along with a nasty chemical called Calcium Disodium EDTA. When it's not being used in food, it's used in cosmetics, cleaning products, photographic chemicals and metal plating. Yum, yum, sounds tasty doesn't it?
And I could go on and on.

Bottom line: Even the processed food we're eating today is not the same processed food our grandparents ate.
And their generation had far fewer cases of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and the like.
Heck, in those days no one ever heard about fatty liver disease unless they were talking about a long-time alcoholic.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease affects one out of every four of the global adult population and is the second-leading cause of end-stage liver disease and liver transplantation in Europe and America.
And most people who have it today DON'T know it yet.
So there’s a little history of how we got to where we are now.

Let’s break it down to one day in your life.
You should begin every day with a probiotic supplement or a probiotic food. That’s going to introduce new good bacteria to your gut. You’re going to be planting seeds in your new garden.

What you eat is certainly important, but what you don’t eat is equally important if you’re going to have a healthy microbiome.
